EACH YEAR, THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHOOSES A
SENIOR FACULTY MEMBER AS THE GRAND MARSHAL FOR THE
COMMENCEMENT. THIS HONOR IS BESTOWED FOR
EXCELLENT TEACHING, SUSTAINED SERVICE TO THE
UNIVERSITY, AND EARNED RESPECT FROM FACULTY COLLEAGUES. HOWEVER, BEFORE I
PRESENT THIS YEAR’S GRAND MARSHAL, I WOULD LIKE
ALL OF OUR FACULTY WHO ARE PRESENT TO STAND SO WE
CAN THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR
STUDENTS’ SUCCESS. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] THANK YOU. OUR GRAND MARSHAL FOR
COMMENCEMENT 2018 IS DR. THOMAS STRYBEL FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF
PSYCHOLOGY. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] I WOULD LIKE TO ASK OUR GRAND
MARSHAL TO cOME FORWARD AND BE RECOGNIZED. DR.
THOMAS STRYBEL HAS BEEN ON THE FACULTY OF THE
PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT FOR 31 YEARS AND WILL ENTER THE
EARLY RETIREMENT
PROGRAM IN FALL, 2018.SO WE’RE NOT LETTING HIM GO
QUITE YET. DR. STRYBEL HAS INSTRUCTED
UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN CORE PSYCHOLOGY
COURSES SUCH AS SENSATION AND PERCEPTION,
STATISTICS AND RESEARCH METHODS.   HE FOUNDED
AND ALSO IN HUMAN FACTORS COURSES.
IN FACT HE FOUNDED THE MASTERS’ PROGRAM IN HUMAN FACTORS IN 2005.
HE’S ALSO FOUNDER OF TWO RESEARCH CENTERS ON
CAMPUS AND HE HAS WRITTEN GRANTS THAT HAVE BROUGHT IN MORE THAN $10 MILLION OF
EXTERNAL FUNDING TO THIS CAMPUS.
AND THAT FUNDING COMES FROM SUCH PRESTIGIOUS FUNDERS AS NASA, BOEING AND ROCKWELL.
STUDENTS IN CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH RELATED TO
TOPICS SUCH AS INTEGRATING DRONES INTO OUR
NATIONAL AEROSPACE SYSTEM AND DETERMINING THE FEPSIBILITY OF SINGLE-PILOT OPERATIONS FOR
COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS. ON THE GROUND, HE’S CONDUCTING
RESEARCH IN HOW TO MINIMIZE DISTRACTED DRIVING.
DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE. WHILE ACCESSING IN-VEHICLE
TECHNOLOGIES TEXTING AND
WALKING. NOT SURPRISINGLY, IN 2010, HE
EARNED THE PROVOST AWARD FOR IMPACT ACCOMPLISHMENT
OF THE YEAR IN RESEARCH, SCHOLARLY AND CREATIVE
ACTIVITY. HE IS KNOWN BY HIS STUDENTS AND
COLLEAGUES AS A DEDICATED AND CARING ACADEMIC WHO
HAS AN ENDURING COMMITMENT IN HIS FIELD TO THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TO
CSULB. PLEASE JOIN ME IN THANKING DR.
DR. THOMAS STRYBEL FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE
BEACH. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] AND NOW IT IS MY PRIVILEGE TO
INTRODUCE OUR PRESIDENT. JANE CLOSE CONOLEY IS
AUTHOR, EDITOR OR CO-AUTHOR OF TWENTY-ONE BOOKS.
SHE HAS ALSO PUBLISHED OVER 100 ARTICLES,
BOOK CHAPTERS AND RESEARCH REPORTS. CLEARLY, SHE IS A VERY SERIOUS
SCHOLAR. HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT THE THING THAT
IMPRESSES ME THE MOST ABOUT HER.
ALMOST FROM THE MOMENT SHE WALKED ONTO THIS CAM
PUPS, SHE HAS ENGAGED OUR CAMPUS AND OUR COMMUNITY
WITH WHAT SEEMS TO BE TO ME TO BE BOUNDLESS ENERGY.
SHE MEETS REGULARLY WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS,
LOBBIES FOR US IN SACRAMENTO, MEETS WITH STUDENT
LEADERS, TALKS WITH FACULTY ABOUT THEIR RECERTAIN: SHE EVEN ATTENDS BASKETBALL,
SOFTBALL, BASEBALL, VOLLEYBALL, WATER POLO MATCHES
AND SHE EVEN MANAGES TO SEND OUT TWEETS
SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. SO PLEASE AT HER @PRESCONOLEY.
I DON’T SEE ANYONE ADDING HER. [LAUGHTER] THIS WEEK SHE WILL CONGRATULATE
OVER 11,000 GRADUATES.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IT IS MY PLEASURE TO
INTRODUCE THE #TH PRESIDENT OF THE CALIFORNIA
STATE UNIVERSITY LONG BEACH, DR. JANE CLOSE
CONOLEY! [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]>>PRESIDENT CONOLEY: HELLO
CLASS OF 2018!FROM THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS.
CONGRATULATION TO EACH OF YOU AND TO YOUR FAMILIES,
FRIENDS, FACULTY, STAFF AND OTHER MENTORS WHO
EACH PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SUPPORTING YOU,
ENURGING YOU, PERHAPS SOMETIMES NAGGING YOU, BUT
CERTAINLY ALWAYS TEACHING, GUIDING AND
LOVING YOU DURING YOUR YEARS AT LONG BEACH STATE
UNIVERSITY. I KNOW THAT EACH OF YOU IS
GRATEFUL TO ALL OF THEM.
AND I WANT TO ADD MY GRATITUDE AND THANKS BECAUSE
EACH OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO HELPED YOU GET WHERE YOU
SIT TODAY HAS REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE NOT ONLY IN
YOUR LIFE BUT IN THE LIFE OF THE UNIVERSITY. EACH
YEAR I PUZZLE OVER WHAT TO SAY DURING THIS TIME, WHAT KIND
OF ENCOURAGEMENT, OR DO I HAVE ANY WISDOM TO
IMPART TO YOU? I SHOULDN’T SAY WISDOM LIKE
THAT. SO I DECIDED I’D SINGLE OUT ONE
ISSUE THAT’S MEANINGFUL TO ALL OF US REALLY
MOST OF THE TIME AND MAYBE PARTICULARLY TO YOU
TODAY, AND THAT’S THE ISSUE OF DEALING WITH
SOMETHING NEW. YOU’RE ALL ABOUT TO DEAL WITH
SOMETHING NEW. YOU WILL NOT BE HERE ANYMORE.
YOU’LL BE ENGAGING IN NEXT STEPS IN YOUR LIVES.
AND ON A MUCH MORE MUNDANE LEVEL, YOU’RE THE
FIRST BEACH GRADUATES TO ACTUALLY HAVE A
COMMENCEMENT ON THIS FIELD. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]
TRUE. AND WHEN THE NEED TO MOVE THE
CEREMONIES FROM THE UPPER CAMPUS TO THIS LOCATION
WAS ANNOUNCED, IT WAS MET WITH SOME CONCERN.
ANYBODY CONCERNED HERE? [LAUGHTER]
YEAH, YEAH, I KNEW THAT. I HEARD IT.
I HEARD IT. AS DISMAY ABOUT THE CHANGE WAS
SHARED WITH ME, IT GAVE ME A CHANCE TO THINK ABOUT:
WHY IS IT THAT SOMETIMES HUMANS HAVE, HUMANS
CERTAINLY LIKE ME, BUT PERHAPS SOME OF YOU AND
EVERYBODY ELSE I KNOW, HAVE TROUBLE DEALING WITH
CHANGE? THERE’S SOMETHING ELSE THAT’S
UNIQUE TO THIS CEREMONY AND YOU JUST HEARD IT
TPREMIER OF OUR NEW ALMA MATER AUTHORED BY CURRENT
STUDENTS CHRISTIAN VALDEZ AND KYLE GABRIEL.
IN CONTRAST TO THE VENUE CHANGE, WHEN IT CAME TO
THE ALMA MATTER, NOBODY SEEMED CONCERNED THAT WE
WERE GIVING UP THE OLD AND REPLACING WITH IT
SOMETHING NEW. SO I HAD TO THINK AGAIN. WHAT IS IT ABOUT CHANGE AND
HUMAN BEHAVIOR THAT SOMETIMES CHANGE SEEMS
INNOCUOUS, INEVITABLE, VERY POSITIVE?
SO I’LL JUST SHARE THE BOTTOM LINE WITH YOU
BECAUSE IT MAY BE USEFUL TO YOU AS YOU MOVE
FORWARD. IT’S USEFUL TO ME WHEN I TRY TO
UNDERSTAND WHY THINGS HAPPEN.
I HOPE YOU WILL FIND IT USEFUL. SO BECAUSE YOU WILL ALL EMERGE
FROM HERE AS LEADERS IN YOUR HAVE VARIOUS
FIELDS, AND BY DEFINITION, LEADERS HAVE
MANAGING CHANGE IN THEIR JOB DESCRIPTIONS.
SO, FIRST OF ALL, I THINK WHILE PEOPLE MAY OR MAY
NOT LIKE A PARTICULAR CHANGE, THIS FIELD OR THAT
FIELD, THEY DEFINITELY DON’T LIKE TO BE SURPRISED
BY A CHANGE IF THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY IT’S
NECESSARY. SO, I’VE ADOPTED A NEW RULE THAT
I OFFER TO YOU. PERHAPS IT WILL BE USEFUL TO
YOU. FIRST SET OUT THE PROBLEM.
THEN INVITE IDEAS AND SOLUTIONS. AND, FINALLY, CRAFT A CHANGE
THAT IS CLEARLY TIED TO SOLVING A PROBLEM THAT PEOPLE
CARE ABOUT. THESE STEPS MAY SAVE YOU A LOT
OF NEGATIVE EMAILS. THEY DIDN’T SAVE ME, BUT I BET
THEY WOULD SAVE YOU. A SHORTER WAY TO SAY THIS IS
THAT AN INCLUSIVE, ITERATIVE PROCESS MATTERS.
YOU CAN’T PLEASE ALL THE PEOPLE EVEN A SMALL PART
OF THE TIME, A CHANGE THAT IS CLEARLY BENEFICIAL
TO A PERSON OR A COMMUNITY IS MORE EQUALLY
EMBRACED, OF COURSE. THIS LESSON I’VE LEARNED — THE
LESSON I’VE LEARNED IS THAT WE TEND TO JUDGE
CHANGE AS GOOD OR BAD BY HOW IT AFFECTS US.
NOW, THAT’S NOT A PARTICULARLY GREAT HUMAN TRAIT,
ESPECIALLY FOR LEADERS, AS YOU ALL WILL BE,
BECAUSE AS LEADERS, YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE A SENSE,
DEVELOP A SENSE AND PERHAPS DEVELOP A SENSE IN
YOUR FOLLOWERS, AS WELL, ABOUT CHANGE FOR THE
COMMON GOOD. BUT UNDERSTANDING THAT PEOPLE
RELATE PERSONALLY MAY BE USEFUL TO YOU AS YOU
MANAGE CHANGE. CERTAINLY CHANGE TIED ONLY TO
“THE NEW” IS UNWELCOME. FINALLY WHEN YOU HAVE CHANGE
MANAGEMENT DUTIES IN YOUR CAREERS, REMEMBER TO BE
FLEXIBILITY IN ALLOWING OTHERS TO HAVE SOME IMPRINT ON
THE CHANGE IS LIKELY TO MAKE IT MORE
PALATABLE. IN THE CASE OF OUR VENUE CHANGE,
MOST OF THE CONCERNS I HEARD INVOLVED LOSING
TREASURED TRADITIONS, ESPECIALLY OUR LIVE
MUSIC. WHEN POSSIBLE, FIND WAYS TO MAKE
THE BIGGEST IMPACT WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF
CHANGE. AFTER YEARS OF HARD WORK AND
DEDICATION, YEARS THAT INCLUDED MANY NEW
EXPERIENCES FOR EACH ONE OF YOU, THE FACT THAT YOU ARE HERE
TODAY SUGGESTS YOU HAVE FLEXIBILITY AND CURIOSITY
TO MANAGE CHANGE. AND THIS IS SUCH A GOOD THING.
I KNOW ALL OF YOU HAVE A LOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW.
YOU’RE EXCITED TO CROSS THE STAGE AND GET ON WITH
THE NEXT STAGE OF YOUR LIFE. YOU’RE THINKING PERHAPS ABOUT
JOBS, ABOUT GRAD SCHOOL, ABOUT FINDING NEW PLACES
TO LIVE, HAVING ADVENTURES AND SO ON.
BUT DO TAKE A MOMENT TO SOAK IN THE LOVE THAT
SURROUNDS YOU. THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY IS ROOTING
FOR EACH OF YOU TO HAVE A SATISFYING, MEANINGFUL,
AND HAPPY LIFE. AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WILL
NEVER CHANGE. I HOPE YOU STAY CONNECTED TO THE
BEACH AND ENJOY HOW YOUR DEGREE BECOMES MORE
VALUABLE AS YOUR NETWORK GROWS, WITH EVERY
GRADUATING CLASS, WITH EACH STUDENT, FACULTY AND ALUMNI
ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND WITH EVERY INNOVATIVE
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, YOUR DEGREE BECOMES MORE
VALUABLE TO YOU BUT ALSO TO THE WORLD. SO FOR THE FINAL TIME FOR ME AT
LEAST, CLASS OF 2018: GO BEACH!
