YEARS SINCE THE FARMINGTON MINE DISASTER, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS GATHERED TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO WERE LOST… REPORTER LARMIE SANYON HAS THE STORY… LARMIE: THESE ARE THE NAMES OF MINERS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN A MINE EXPLOSION 51 YEARS AGO IN THE FARMINGTON MINE DISASTER. LARMIE: IN THE EARLY HOURS OF NOVEMBER 20 1968–78 COAL MINERS LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE NUMBER 9 MINE OF THE CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY–19 BODIES WERE NEVER RECOVERED. LARMIE: FAMILY MEMBERS, LAWMAKERS AND OTHERS GATHERED IN A MEMORIAL CEREMONY TO HONOR AND REMEMBER THEM. CECIL ROBERTS: THIS IS SUCH A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO THOSE MINERS WHO DIED, THOSE WIDOWS WHO WOKE UP AS I SAID, TO BED AS A WIFE WOKE UP AS WIDOWS NOT ONLY THAT THEY WOKE UP AS THE HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD LARMIE: ROBERTS SAYS HE WAS HAPPY TO SEE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE HAS GROWN EVERY YEAR INSTEAD OF DECREASING LARMIE: THIS MEMORIAL BEHIND ME COMMEMORATES THE PAST BUT IT’S ALSO REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FUTURE BECAUSE MANY IN THE INDUSTRY SAY IF THESE MINERS HAD NOT LOST THEIR LIVES ON THAT DAY NOT MUCH WOULD’VE CHANGED IN THE INDUSTRY. LEVI ALLEN: I WORKED 8 YEARS IN AN UNDERGROUND COAL MINE, I LEFT THAT MINE ALIVE EVERYDAY BECAUSE OF THE EFFORT AND THE SACRIFICES THESE WORKERS MADE. LARMIE: IN THE WAKE OF THE DISASTER, CONGRESS PASSED THE NATION’S FIRST COMPREHENSIVE MINE SAFETY AND HEALTH LEGISLATION, THE MINE SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1969. CECIL: THIS WAS A CATALYST FOR ALL THAT CHANGE AND THE ANSWER IS IT DIDN’T HAVE TO COME THIS WAY BUT IT DID.
