What is a BLACK Diamond? | Jill Maurer

This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry
Minute, and today I’m answering the question, “What is a black diamond?” A black
diamond is a real diamond. It is a natural diamond that has so many
inclusions and different elements in it as it was growing that it looks black to
the eye. This is actually an example where inclusions and different elements
in the stone is a good thing. It we like black diamonds. Now that would be
a natural black diamond formed in the earth. you can also have a natural
diamond that just has a lot of inclusions in it. It isn’t a very pretty
diamond at all, and you wouldn’t use it as a white diamond. Sometimes if you heat
that diamond or radiate it, it will become black. That’s how most diamonds on
the market today are. They have been treated to turn black, and that’s a
perfectly acceptable form of treatment for a diamond. If somebody doesn’t tell
you whether a black diamond has been treated or not, just assume that it has
been treated. Most of them have, and that is perfectly acceptable.
There are also imitation black diamonds if, but that should be sold to you as
such. That would be like you know it’s similar to a cubic zirconia where
somebody has just created a diamond ,but other than that black diamonds are real
diamonds, and they have become very popular today. They’re a nice alternative
to a white diamond. They’re they have a little more drama, a little edgier. People
will use them. I use them often in with silver. I love the look of black diamonds
and a an oxidized or blackened silver. It’s just a look that I happen to love a
lot, but people do put them in gold. They put them in any kind of in any kind of
jewelry, and they’ve become pretty popular for wedding rings. They’re a nice
alternative style to a wedding ring. This has been Your Jewelry Minute. If you have
a question for me, just ask me in the comments below. Until next time!

  1. A black diamond will always remind me of Carry Bradshaw in the Sex and the City movie ,when Mr Big gives her a black diamond ,I have never seen a black diamond up close before but I can totally understand its appeal to some being so different from the Norm ! Thanks for sharing Jill ! Have a great weekend

  4. This was so fascinating! I love your Jewelry Minute series. I’ve a solitaire black diamond in white gold, and I have always wondered if black diamonds occur naturally.

  5. I first heard about black diamonds from the Sex and the City movie! Are they priced the same as other regular diamonds, or are they more expensive?
